Downloadable Help

  About OverDrive

  • You need a valid library card from the Duluth Public Library or the Arrowhead Library System.

  • In order to download OverDrive Kindle books, you must also have a (free) Amazon account. Kindle books do not need Adobe Digital Editions

  • To download eBooks (other than for Kindle) on a computer, you will need Adobe Digital Editions software. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions

  • Activate Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions can be activated anonymously or by using an Adobe ID. Anonymous activation allows you to download and read DRM-protected eBooks on a single computer only. Activating using an Adobe ID allows you to download and read DRM-protected eBooks on multiple computers and transfer them to supported eBook devices. More information about Adobe Digital Editions.

  • To download digital audiobooks on a personal computer, you will need to download the OverDrive software for Mac or Windows.
  • To download ebooks or digital audiobooks to a smartphone, tablet or other devices, use the Libby app from the device's app store.
  • Select and check out the title(s) you want. You may choose a 1, 2 or 3 week loan period. Once you have checked out a title, you can choose to read it in your browser or download to a device. Once the download is complete, open and enjoy the title.
  • List of compatible eBook devices.

  • Limit: a total of 10 OverDrive audiobook and/or eBook titles

  • At the end of the loan period, the title will expire and be automatically "returned" to the Library. Titles may, however, be returned before the loan period is up through Adobe Digital Editions (for ePub books),  your Amazon account (for Kindle books) or on the Libby app.
  • When a hold is available, users will receive a notification. Users can then:
    1. Borrow the title within 3 days.
    2. Suspend the hold by selecting “deliver later.” This option passes the book to the next person in line while maintaining the user’s place on the waitlist. After the suspension period (set by the user), the user will be able to borrow the book when the next copy is available.
    3. Cancel the hold.
If the user takes no action, their hold will automatically be suspended as a one-time courtesy for 7 days. If no action is taken a second time, the hold will be canceled automatically.
